David Carson is a graphic designer. He claims that his lack of training helped him because he just interpreted articles into design. Because he defies rules of design, due to the fact he strictly works off instinct, he has been called self indulgent, but he loves this and says he would never have anyone work for him who wasn’t self indulgent. It makes the work more personal. He says the starting point is to try to interpret something. he asks himself what he he just read? What does it mean? He doesn’t strive to make something pretty or ugly. He’s not trying to create an award winning piece, he’s just trying to accurately interpret what he reads.

Mike and Doug Starn

Mike and Doug Starn are identical twin brothers who work collaboratively on photography. They are unable to be categorized because they combine traditionally separated mediums such as paint, photography, installation, and sculpture. The first piece they were publicly commissioned for was a huge showing of their iconic tree photographs, that is still housed in a NYC subway terminal. They are currently working on a huge project that blurs the boundaries between architecture, performance, and sculpture.

Sherman’s Untitled Film Stills

Cindy Sherman has produced an extensive untitled film stills series. They are black and white photographs, many of them use herself as the model, and they look more like stills from a movie than anything else. The project began with the exploitation of an imaginary blonde actress, played by Sherman. These images capture “the star” in moments vulnerable moments around her home. The photographs are 8 by 10 and lure viewers in to the drama of the fabricated scene. in the 1980s, she introduced high contrast and color to her work, adding intensity.

Cindy Sherman is one of the most respected photographers of our time. The majority of her work is of her, but they do not divulge information about her. rather, she uses herself as a model to speak about different issues, times, and people.”In self-reflexive photographs and films, Cindy Sherman invents myriad guises, metamorphosing from Hollywood starlet to clown to society matron. Often with the simplest of means—a camera, a wig, makeup, an outfit—Sherman fashions ambiguous but memorable characters that suggest complex lives lived out of frame” (art:21). Sherman leaves all of her works untitled, allowing her audience to draw their own conclusions about the pieces. This gives viewers the opportunity to invent their own characters and situations for these characters based on Sherman’s work. She has extensively studied and constantly continues to investigate portraiture and self-portraiture.

I love the lighting used on this bottom photograph. It adds to the meaning of the piece because viewers get a sense of the time of day. I think it’s very ominous because it looks like the sun is beginning to set and something is going to happen.

Andy Goldsworthy

Andy Goldsworthy is a working British artist who collaborates with nature to create his pieces. He works with whatever he can find, including twigs, leaves, and stones. His process is in intimate one, and he tries to be as organic as possibly by working closely with and participating in nature. Once his pieces are created, he photographs them once, immediately. Goldsworthy says of his process, “I enjoy the freedom of just using my hands and “found” tools–a sharp stone, the quill of a feather, thorns. I take the opportunities each day offers: if it is snowing, I work with snow, at leaf-fall it will be with leaves; a blown-over tree becomes a source of twigs and branches. I stop at a place or pick up a material because I feel that there is something to be discovered. Here is where I can learn. ”

The duo has produced everything from drawing, sculptures, and installations to videos and performances. They hope to not only engage and entertain viewers, but also to challenge them through their evident sense of humor. I struggled with this project because precision is not my specialty. I am happy with the final result, my only after thought is I wish I hadn’t been concerned with the sharpie bleeding because it looks nicer and cleaner than the pens I used.

TEN THINGS I LIKE ABOUT MY PROJECT

The designs are drawn well
the boarders are well erased
my closure works well
the bristol board is cut well
I followed the directions well
I conducted research and read the chapter in the book and it is evident in my final result
My best examples ( rotational, closure, value scale, and contrast) I practiced and made several examples
there are no fingerprints
I invested a lot of time on the project
all the problems are solved

TEN THINGS THAT NEED IMPROVEMENT/ I DON’T LIKE

cleaner/ nicer ink marks
improve the trimming
fold better
get rid of marks
tape neater/ cleaner edge on tape
fix the slit in between my contrast and figure ground reversal (it kills me)
get rid of mark on dot on rotational symmetry solution
measure better
redo my translational symmetry because I compromised the design when I tried to cover marks
get debris off, especially off the tape

Kerry James Marshall

Kerry James Marshall, best known for his paintings, installations, and public projects, uses African-American popular culture as inspiration. He was born and raised near the Black Panthers headquarters, as has this apparent self responsibility to speak about racism consequently. His figures are depicted with dark skin tones because he feels it speaks about the invisibility and negative associations with darkness and dark people.
